Online proctored tests and exams are becoming the new normal because of the flexibility they offer. But flexibility doesn’t mean less rigor. In fact, online testing requires more rigor and preparation than going to a traditional test center. Whether you’re taking a professional certification, licensure exam, or other assessment, it’s good to be prepared.
Testing from home is not like working from home – making an educated decision before deciding to take an online exam is crucial. As a test taker, you will be required to ensure you have a suitable device and testing space that meets all requirements. And understanding the technical requirements necessary for taking online proctored exams is essential for a smooth experience.
Running a system test and taking some simple steps before the exam day ensures your computer and internet service meet the necessary requirements and helps prevent potential distractions. This blog will help you get ready for your test day.
What are online proctored tests and exams?
Online proctoring allows you to take a test, exam or assessment at home, in the office, or almost anywhere. To keep the exam secure, your testing space must be private, and tests cannot be taken outdoors or anywhere public.
Online proctoring is a way of keeping remote testing fair for everyone. Human proctors play a crucial role in ensuring test security and supporting test takers during online exams. Just like during an in-person exam, an online proctor checks a test taker’s identity and looks for suspicious behavior. But instead of walking around an exam hall or test center, an online proctor uses the webcam and microphone on a test taker’s device.
It is important to understand the differences between online exams and in-person exams, as each has specific rules and requirements.
What equipment do I need to take a remote online proctored test or exam?
You will need a dependable device with a working webcam and microphone, and a stable internet connection. It is crucial to ensure that the exam content is displayed correctly on-screen to avoid any issues that could affect your experience during the exam.
It is also essential that you either own the device you will be taking your test on, or you have admin access. All banned applications must be closed before a test. Without admin access you will be unable to close any banned applications and start your test.
How do I know if my equipment is suitable for a PSI online proctored test or exam?
It’s important to perform a System Compatibility Check before your test day to make sure your equipment is suitable for online proctoring. This will check that your device’s operating system, hardware, and current internet bandwidth are suitable for online proctoring.
You can run an online Compatibility Check here.
It’s a good idea to run the Compatibility Check in the same place you plan to take your test. For the best experience with the System Compatibility Check, please use the latest version of the Chrome browser.
In addition to the Compatibility Check, you must also launch the exam tutorial you receive after booking your test. This will ensure you can:
- Install the required software (secure browser).
- Close banned applications (requires admin access to the device).
How do I set up my room for an online proctored test or exam?
It is crucial to create a suitable testing environment for an online exam to ensure a smooth and fair experience. Find a private location where you won’t be disturbed, preferably with a door you can close, as no one else is allowed in the room while you are taking your test.
According to the rules of some testing organizations, an interruption by another person could result in your test being stopped. That’s why it’s important to check the rules before your test.
Your testing space should be quiet and free from clutter. This means your desk and testing space should be free of anything you don’t need to take the exam – meaning nothing more than the device needed to take the exam. Everything else must be removed and the area you plan to take the test de-personalized. Think about the remote testing environment as if it’s a test center. The only thing on the desk is the computer and a mouse / mousepad.

What identification documents do I need to take an online proctored test or exam?
You will need valid, government-issued photo identification to check-in for your online proctored test. Your identification must contain your full name and a recent, recognizable photo (note: military IDs and credit cards are not allowed). You cannot use a temporary or expired ID.
Please check with your testing organization what identification you need before test day and have the documents with you when you sit down to take your test.

Your testing organization may send you a test tutorial. This tutorial is where you will experience the full technical rigor of exam day and be able to install the required software. It will also ensure you have admin access, by being exposed to the banned applications.
I need special equipment or accommodations to take my exam – how do I know what’s allowed?
Some medicines, medical devices, and communication aids do not need to be requested before your test day. But there are some accommodations that do need to go through a formal request process.

Are there other ways I can prepare for an online proctored test or exam?
Understanding the testing experience can reduce stress and enhance the overall experience.
Please plan additional time and preparation for system checks on test day. We recommend going to the launch link up to 30 minutes before your test is due to start. This will give you time to download the proctoring software, undergo system checks, and close any computer programs that could interfere with online proctoring.
It may seem obvious, but make sure you have your photo identification with you when you sit down to take your test.
