Virginia Contractor License Exam FAQs

What classifications require testing?

The Board for Contractors licenses businesses engaged in the construction, removal, repair, or improvement of facilities on property owned by others. Contractor licenses consist of two parts: the class of license (A, B, or C), which determines the monetary value of contracts/projects that may be performed, and the classification/specialty, which determines what type of work is allowed. The Board also licenses tradesmen, as well as individuals and firms engaged in residential building energy analysis, which involves evaluation of energy consumption and recommendations to improve energy efficiency.

For more information on available classification exams, visit the DPOR program page.

To retake a DPOR exam, you must reschedule and pay the exam fee again. The specific instructions, fees, and scheduling process will depend on the particular profession and exam you are taking. Additional exam information is  available under the DPOR program page.

A business course is required for many classifications provided by DPOR. This is a mandatory course that must be completed prior to submitting your application. To determine if the business law portion is needed for your program, please review the specific course requirements.
