How to become an FAA-approved Test Center

Becoming a test center involves a structured vetting and approval process to ensure compliance with both the FAA’s and PSI’s security, technology, and accessibility requirements. Here is an overview of the key application process steps:

Application review

  • Preliminary evaluation of your site’s suitability.
  • Review of site location, demographics, and compliance with FAA requirements.
  • Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee approval. While meeting the minimum site requirements is essential, approval decisions are also based on additional factors, including regional supply and demand. Applications are reviewed holistically, and approval is subject to the specific program needs.

Contracting

  • Collection of site details, tax information, and legal agreements.
  • Review and acceptance of the PSI Testing Center Agreement.

Site requirements verification

To ensure your facility aligns with FAA and PSI standards, we evaluate several key areas, including:

  • Accessibility & Compliance: Meeting local building codes and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.
  • Security: Secure testing rooms with video surveillance, restricted access, and adherence to PSI’s test security protocols.
  • Technology Infrastructure: Reliable internet connectivity, appropriate computer hardware, and necessary software compatibility.
  • Testing Capacity: A minimum of three (3) testing stations with at least 24 hours of test availability per week.

These are just a few of the factors we assess during the application process. For the complete list of site requirements, please visit Test Center Requirements and for the full list of computer specifications please visit the Computer Specifications page.

Site documentation

  • Submission of floor plans, site photos/videos, and vendor information for approval.
  • Verification of security measures and facility compliance.

Site setup & inspection

  • Physical inspection to confirm compliance with FAA and PSI standards.
  • Post-inspection processing and staff training to ensure readiness.

Staff training

  • PSI provides comprehensive training for your site staff, including professional development resources.
  • Ensuring test administrators are equipped to deliver a seamless, secure testing experience.

Go live & ongoing support

  • Your site becomes an official FAA-Approved Test Center.
  • Dedicated support from PSI to assist with operations, staffing, and compliance.
